Director: Tiffany Powell

Tiffany Powell is a native of Western Pennsylvania. From an early age, her love of singing and music was apparent. She also showed a natural ability and interest in teaching and directing. Her training and experiences in the performing arts remained at the forefront of her education throughout her primary and secondary school years. Although initially anticipating and gearing her college education toward a career in the medical field, it was her passion for music and the performing arts that ultimately led her to pursue a music degree. Ms. Powell earned her Bachelor of Science in Music Education and Master of Music in Music Education degrees from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she performed and studied conducting under the leadership of Dr. Brady Allred.

Ms. Powell began her teaching career in the Pennsylvania public school system in January of 1999 as a long-term leave replacement at Ambridge High School. Later that fall, she was hired as the Choral Director for Knoch High School and Middle School in the South Butler County School District. She taught for six years in this position during which time she also wrote a new curriculum for the high school choral program, served as vocal director and eventually producer of the spring musical, was advisor of the National Honor Society chapter and became the Department Chair Position in her last two years. While managing an active teaching career, Ms. Powell concurrently performed with the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh and maintained a part time schedule as a private vocal instructor.

Tiffany Powell joined the music faculty of Oakton High School (Fairfax County Public Schools) as the Director of High School Choral Activities in the fall of 2005. At Oakton, Ms. Powell directs four primary and one secondary choral ensemble, serves as vocal director for the spring musical productions and holds the position of Performing Arts Department Chair. She is a former Choral Representative for VCDA District XII and continues to host District events. Ms. Powell is also the current Secretary for the Fairfax County Choral Directors Association (FCCDA). Her ensembles study and perform a varied repertoire and consistently earn superior ratings at both district level and national level music festivals throughout the United States. Most recently, the Oakton Madrigals under Powell’s direction have been invited to perform for the Virginia Music Educators Association state conference.

Tiffany Powell lives in South Riding, Virginia with her husband, Mike Horanski, who is the Choral Director at Robinson Secondary School (Fairfax County Public Schools) in Fairfax, VA, and their son, Aidan.
